Last month, Razer began a developer preview of Android Oreo, and said that the stable version would be rolling out next month. And true to its word, Razer has started rolling out Android 8.1 Oreo to its Razer Phone, beginning today. The roll out is a phased roll out, which will be completing over the next 10 days, so if you do not get the update today or tomorrow, just sit tight as it will reach your device in the coming days.
With Android 8.1 Oreo, the Razer Phone is effectively skipping Android 8.0 and jumping straight to the latest version of Android. Which is a good thing, for sure. Razer has not yet released a changelog for the update yet, but it has improved some of its existing features with Android 8.1 Oreo. Which includes Netflix HDR content, Dolby Atmos, and 120Hz gaming. Additionally, Razer is touting some under-the-hood improvements with the update, and users should also expect an update to Nova Launcher. Of course, you do get all of the Android Oreo changes here, including a new settings app, as well as slightly changed quick settings menu in the notification panel. Razer has kept the stock Android look and feel here, which is something that many Android fans love about the device.
The developer preview has been running on our Razer Phone for a little over a week, and the developer preview was pretty smooth already. So the stable version should be even better. In terms of performance, there doesn’t appear to be a lot of big changes here with the Razer Phone, but it is still pretty fast. Of course, that’s expected with a Snapdragon 835 processor and 8GB of RAM. It’s good to see Android Oreo available for the Razer Phone, even if it did take a bit longer than many users would have liked it to take. To find and download the update onto your Razer Phone, simply head into Settings, tap on About Phone and then System update. As mentioned already, this is a staged update, and will complete over the next 10 days. So you may not get the update right away.
