Huawei has confirmed that it is going to be making an Android Go device that will be part of its Y-series. The Y-series is typically full of low-end and mid-range smartphones, so it would make sense to bring an Android Go device into that range of smartphones. The company had confirmed at Mobile World Congress back in February that it would be launching an Android Go device, however now it has confirmed which series it’ll be part of.
The device in question is rumored to be the Y5 Lite 2018, although that is not confirmed. Huawei did mention that it would be debuting the Android Go device in May, however, and that it will likely launch in South Africa first. There aren’t a lot of specs available for this smartphone just yet, but different executives have said it’ll likely sport 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. Which puts it right in line with other Android Go smartphones. Android Go has at least 512MB of RAM and 8GB of storage, so that would put it squarely in the Android Go space.
Android Go is a product that Google debuted at Google I/O last year in Mountain View. It’s essentially a version of Android that is made specifically for lower-end devices. As mentioned, it can work on smartphones with as little as 512MB of RAM and 8GB of storage. With Android Go, there are many apps that have been slimmed down – like Google Maps, YouTube and others – to work better on this hardware. At Mobile World Congress in February, a number of Android Go smartphones debuted, from manufacturers like ZTE, Alcatel, Nokia (HMD Global) and more. It’s a product that is likely going to pick up even more attention in the coming months. It’s all a way for Google to bring Android to even more users, especially those that can’t afford a smartphone that costs $700 or more.
