Samsung has introduced an entry-level device to the Indian market under its J line of smartphones. Called the Galaxy J2 (2018), the handset is a budget offering positioned at the lower end of the spectrum and is priced at Rs. 8,190 ($123). The company will make it available for purchase starting tomorrow, April 27, along with a couple of launch offers from local carrier Reliance Jio. Any Jio customer purchasing this Samsung handset will get vouchers worth Rs. 2,750 ($41) credited to their MyJio account on fulfilling the condition of enabling either Rs. 198 or Rs. 299 plan for their connection. An extra 100GB of 4G data spread across ten consecutive recharges will also be offered by the carrier.
On the design front, the Galaxy J2 (2018) features a form factor that is reminiscent of most of the Samsung-branded phones, especially in the low-end segment. The smartphone comes with a 5-inch Super AMOLED display using a conventional 16:9 aspect ratio that offers a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels. A quad-core Snapdragon 425 SoC clocked at 1.4GHz powers the device while being paired with the Adreno 308 GPU. It includes 2GB of RAM, along with 16GB of internal memory that can be further expanded by up to 256GB via a microSD card tray. Besides support for two SIM cards, the phone will ship with Android 7.1 Nougat and a 2,600mAh battery. In terms of connectivity, the J2 (2018) supports Wi-Fi 802.11n standard, 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth 4.1, and GPS. An 8-megapixel camera can be found on the phone’s back and a 5-megapixel unit resides on the front, both of which are paired with an LED flash of their own. Samsung Mall, a feature introduced with the Galaxy On7 Prime, comes pre-loaded on the device, which helps users find and shop for products from popular Indian online stores by tapping their photos. A headphone jack and a micro-USB port are present on the device’s top and bottom side, respectively.
Back in January, the South Korean company introduced the same device with slightly different internals in Vietnam as the Galaxy J2 Pro (2018). The Pro variant came running Android 7.0 Nougat and had 1.5GB of RAM while being priced at $145. The phone had leaked quite a few times before getting an official launch and will possibly make its way to even more markets in the coming weeks.
