The recently rumored Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 SoC is actually the Snapdragon 670 SoC and might possible feature first in two Xiaomi-branded smartphones, according to a new report out of XDA-Developers. While the past week has since reports coming through on both of these SoCs, it now seems as though they are one and the same as the report has found evidence that Qualcomm started with the 670 name but has since opted to rebrand the 670 as the 710, hence the confusion.
Adding to that confusion is the fact that neither of these processors have been officially announced by Qualcomm yet. Instead, at MWC 2018 Qualcomm announced it is going to bring to market a new line of processors under the general 700-series banner. Since then, one of the reports from the last week stated the first of the 700-series processors to arrive will be the Snapdragon 710 – formerly known as the 670. So while the existence of the 710 is a new thing, if it is indeed the 670 then many of the finer details surrounding the new chipset have already been leaked. Like for example, the fact that while it is an octa-core processor the cores will not be broken down into two sets of four. Instead, the high-performance cluster will be dual core with the remaining six cores forming a hexa-core cluster.
Which is where the two Xiaomi devices now come in as the same report not only found firmware confirmations of the use of the 710 SoC, but also the same core cluster breakdown. SoC aside, the finer details on these devices are a little more vague as it is still unclear whether they are designed for the consumer marker or are just currently being used as testing devices by the company. However, the information the latest report has managed to obtain includes the use of “Comet” and “Sirius” codenames, as well as the suggestion there is likely to be a significant overlap between the two. For example, neither feature NFC or microSD card support but both feature Android 8.1 (Oreo), dual SIM support, an IR blaster and an OLED display that also supports Always-on functionality. Although Sirius is also said to include a notch as well as Portrait Mode support. Likewise, although the battery capacities are essentially the same, they do differ slightly with Comet featuring a 3,100 mAh capacity battery compared to Sirius and its 3,120 mAh capacity battery.
