Smart Home Weekly: Sony's X900F TV Brings Alexa & Google Assistant Into Your Home

The Sony X900F TV is a 55-inch LED TV that the company announced back at CES 2018 in January, but the TV set is now finally available, and it’s a great one to pick up to compliment your smart home. Simply because it sports both Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. Allowing you to bring your favorite personal assistant into your home, no matter which platform you are using for the rest of your smart home.

The X900F TV is a new TV from Sony. Like others from the company in the past few years, it does sport Android TV – which is why it has Google Assistant. So you’re going to get a slew of great apps on the TV itself, including Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Google Play Movies & TV, Sling TV and many others. On top of that, you’ll get plenty of Android games to play on the TV. Google Assistant is here, and it works just like it does on the Google Home, so it can be used to control your smart home, or just find something to watch on YouTube, or another service. There is also a dedicated Google Assistant button on the X900F’s remote, so the TV is not always listening to you (a good thing in today’s age with everyone worried about being spied on). Simply press the button and start talking to Google. You do not even need to do the “Ok Google” or “Hey Google” hotword.

It also has Amazon Alexa built-in, which makes it the first Android TV to have Alexa, and one of the few TV’s to actually have Alexa itself. Much like with the Google Assistant, you can do everything with this TV and Alexa that you would with an Echo. So you can ask Alexa to turn off your lights and even help you find something to watch. It’s not a big part of the operating system, visually, but it is there and it’s a nice addition here. With Alexa and Google Assistant here, you never really need to use the remote control ever again.

The TV itself is a really great TV to put into your living room, or anywhere else in the home. It’s a 4K HDR TV, that does use Dolby Vision, so you’re going to get a great picture here, and that’s also thanks to the 4K HDR Processor X1 Extreme that is included to process these images. Sony also has X-Motion Clarity here to help keep the picture nice and clear, and reduce the blur in the image. This is especially important when watching face-paced programs like sports.

Sony sells the X900F in five sizes, beginning with the 49-inch at $1049. There is also a 55-inch for $1498, 65-inch for $2198, 75-inch for $3798 and a 85-inch model available for $5298. These do get pretty pricey, the further up you go, as you’d expect with Sony. But the 49-inch and 55-inch models are the most popular of the X900F’s model lineup, and definitely worth picking up. Even if you aren’t looking to get into the smart home world, these are great TV’s that just so happen to work with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.
