Sony’s PlayStation unit is bringing the map from the new God of War game to your living room via an augmented reality app called God of War: Mimir’s Vision. While the very name of the app is technically a spoiler, the fact that Mimir was in the game has already been heavily publicized by Sony Santa Monica through a number of trailers and gameplay footage released in recent months. The app itself is powered by ARCore, Google’s AR solution for mobile devices that’s already available on over a hundred million smartphones around the globe, though it’s still lacking some notable models from its list of supported handsets, including Samsung’s Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus flagships.
Owners of compatible devices can hence project the map of the latest PlayStation 4 exclusive on any flat surface, in addition to learning more about various locations that made their way to the critically acclaimed game. Note that when it comes to a story-driven title like the new God of War, even just seeing its full map can arguably be considered a spoiler and the very promotional screenshots showcased as part of the app’s Google Play Store listing reveal some highly unique locations that you may want to discover yourself without knowing that they exist, so if you fit that description, you’d be better off not installing the app until you have at the very least beaten the game’s main storyline given how there’s still plenty more to do after that.
Google’s ARCore works on operating system versions as old as Android 7.0 Nougat from late 2016 but the system’s current list of supported devices means you’ll need a relatively recent flagship in order to use God of War: Mimir’s Vision. The mobile tool doesn’t communicate with your console in any way, i.e. it hasn’t been envisioned as a companion app but simply a tech demo meant to showcase both the AR capabilities of your device and promote Sony‘s latest AAA exclusive that’s shaping up to be an early contender for many people’s game of the year, at least given its initial reviews.
