Vodafone UK is now selling Samsung’s Galaxy A8 Android mid-ranger, the British wireless carrier said Friday. The company is offering the device in Black and Orchid Grey color options, with the handset starting at £9 down and £43 per month on a Red Extra 16GB plan. The overall price of the Galaxy A8 is in line with other markets, with the smartphone previously debuting in Europe at approximately €500, depending on the country, i.e. specific value-added tax rates.
The Galaxy A8 is meant to be an evolution of Samsung’s mid-range formula, being the first non-flagship offering from the company with an Infinity Display panel, a 5.6-inch Super AMOLED screen with an elongated 18.5:9 aspect ratio. The display of the device is of the FHD+ variety, supporting resolutions of up to 2,220 by 1,080 pixels, with the Galaxy A8 itself being powered by Samsung’s proprietary Exynos 7885 chip, an octa-core silicon running at up to 2.2GHz. The variant being offered by Vodafone UK ships with 32GB of storage space, with the firm not mentioning the 64GB model that presumably won’t be making its way to the United Kingdom. Likewise, the dual-SIM variant of the Galaxy A8 is only sold unlocked and hence isn’t the one that’s now being offered by the mobile service provider.
The telecom giant also isn’t retailing the Galaxy A8 Plus which ships with a 6-inch screen and 6GB of RAM as opposed to 4GB, but is otherwise mostly identical to its smaller counterpart which is equipped with a 16-megapixel camera. The Galaxy A8 series is meant to succeed Samsung’s Galaxy A7 product family from last year and provide consumers with versatile mobile offerings at non-flagship prices. The South Korean tech giant is expected to continue pushing for its bezel-less design language to trickle down to its more affordable devices going forward, with the firm’s entry-level handsets possibly being next in line to receive such a revamp later this year. Samsung itself is still enjoying record profits and is said to be preparing its next high-end release for late summer when the phone maker is expected to announce the Galaxy Note 9 Android flagship.
