A real-life image depicting what’s said to be the retail packaging of Xiaomi’s Mi 6X appeared online on Sunday, having originated on Chinese social media network Weibo. The photograph that can be seen above indicates the Mi 6X, i.e. the Mi A2, will be equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 660 chip and a dual-camera setup on its back panel, with the system entailing two 20-megapixel sensors and coming with support for what sounds like some kind of a beauty mode, with the package specifically mentioning a camera setting that allows you to “make people more beautiful.” The front-facing camera of the Mi 6X is listed as another 20-megapixel affair, with the package also including a USB Type-C dongle for a 3.5mm audio port, meaning the upcoming Android mid-ranger will almost certainly lack a traditional headphone jack.
The Mi 6X is expected to be a direct successor to the Mi 5X, better known as the Mi A1, which is how Xiaomi called it in the West, with the non-Chinese variant of the said handset being the company’s first foray into stock Android territory as the device launched through Google’s Android One program. The Mi A1 ended up being one of the best value-oriented smartphones of the year, according to numerous critics and consumer reviews, with Xiaomi’s surveys suggesting that even its own fans prefer a vanilla Android experience over MIUI. The company has been ambiguous when asked about whether it intends to follow up on the Mi A1 until recently, though the Mi 6X is now widely expected to be introduced on April 25.
The international version of the device that’s likely to bear the Mi A2 name should launch shortly thereafter and will likely be priced in the ballpark of $200, much like the original Mi A1. Xiaomi itself will have a busy year between trying to enter more markets, recouping its position in China, and making preparations for an IPO that’s said to be coming in the second half of the year, hosted by Hong Kong.
