The in-display fingerprint reader meant to be implemented into the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus will be supplied by Qualcomm, South Korean outlet ETNews reports, citing sources familiar with the matter. The solution will be of the ultrasonic variety, hence likely featuring better accuracy and shorter response times than the module integrated into a number of Vivo-made handsets released earlier this year, insiders claim. Such superior results require a convoluted setup that Samsung has reportedly been calibrating for months now, having opted against having an under-display fingerprint reader on the Galaxy Note 9 as it wasn’t confident it can deliver an optimal experience in time for the phablet’s commercial release in September which is expected following an IFA debut in late August.
The screen of the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus will still be of the Super AMOLED variety, produced by Samsung Display, with the 18.5:9 aspect ratio introduced with the Galaxy S8 lineup in early 2017 being expected to remain unchanged, as per the same report. Due to that state of affairs, Samsung will likely stick with its “Infinity Display” marketing scheme, though the upcoming flagships may feature even smaller bezels than the Galaxy S9 series. Both should ship with Android 9.0 P-based Samsung Experience.
While the overall design of the Galaxy S10 family may not be too different to what Samsung already released over the last two years, the two phones are still expected to debut a wide variety of new technologies; besides a new type of a fingerprint sensor, the phablets are rumored to feature a 3D camera similar to Apple’s depth-sensing solution integrated into the notch of the iPhone X, except Samsung is said to have identified a way to commercialize such a technology without delivering a device sporting a screen cutout. A new audio setup with no traditional speakers may be part of the package as well. The Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus are also predicted to be Samsung’s first mobile offerings with 5G capabilities, with the pair being expected to launch in early 2019, most likely at Barcelona-based MWC.
