Reddit has moved up the ranks to become the third most-visited website in the US, according to the latest data from Alexa.com. These “traffic estimates” are based on data collected through “a sample of millions of Internet users,” as well as sites that employ the Alexa script provided by the Amazon-related analytics service. Therefore, while they do provide a snapshot of the current website landscape, it is only one snapshot.
In either case, the data itself suggests Reddit has been seeing an increased level of user growth of late, with its move up the US charts coming at the expense of Facebook who has now moved down to fourth position – followed by Amazon in fifth. Rounding out the top five is YouTube in second place, and Google in first. While this is likely to be welcomed news for Reddit, what is possible more of an important measure is the average time spent on these websites by users. As when that metric is taken into sole consideration, Reddit actually becomes the number one site due to users on average spending fifteen minutes and ten seconds on the site. This compares to slightly over seven minutes for Google, eight and a half minutes for YouTube, and just under eleven minutes for Facebook. Highlighting users are not just spending more time on Reddit compared to the other sites, but by a fairly significant margin. This is also in addition to Reddit seemingly accounting for more daily page views per visitor on average, compared to the rest of the top 10.
At the global level, however, the impact of Reddit is less obviously seen as “the front page of the internet” ranks in sixth place overall. With Google remaining in first place, YouTube in second, Facebook in third, Baidu in fourth, and Wikipedia in fifth. Although on the positive side, even when focusing on the global data, Reddit still remains the leader within the top 10 when it comes to the average amount of time spent on the site by users, and the number of daily page views per visitor.
