With a post on its official Weibo account, Xiaomi has confirmed the launch date for its upcoming mid-ranger Redmi S2 Android smartphone. According to the post, the new device will be announced on May 10 in China under a new S series which will be sold exclusively via Suning Tesco. The smartphone has already received all the necessary certifications from TENAA, which apparently also revealed all its specifications along with its photos. From what it looks, the phone will be positioned in the mid-range segment and will carry a design heavily inspired by the recently announced Mi 6X.
As per the TENAA listing, the new Redmi smartphone will feature a 5.99-inch display in the 18:9 aspect ratio with an HD+ resolution of 1,440 x 720 pixels that will be covered with a 2.5D curved glass. A slightly older Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor from Qualcomm will fuel the device along with Adreno 506 GPU. Three RAM and storage variants of the phone are expected to be announced – 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, and 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage – all of which will be expandable by up to 128GB using a hybrid microSD card slot. It will come running Android 8.1 Oreo with MIUI 9 on top and will include an infrared sensor and a fingerprint sensor on the back. A dual-camera setup will be present on the phone’s back that’ll include a 12-megapixel primary camera with Sony IMX486/OmniVision OV12A10 sensor. It will support PDAF and EIS besides being paired with an LED flash and a Samsung-made secondary camera sensor of 5 megapixels. While weighing 170 grams, the phone will carry a 3,080mAh battery.
From the photos provided by the certification agency, the Redmi S2 seems to be donning design elements that were first seen on the Mi 6X. Most of the elements including a full metal back, the vertical orientation of its two cameras, and the antenna lines are very similar to the latter. However, being a part of the Redmi series, it will be positioned below the Mi 6X, which boasts a much superior set of specifications that are more in accordance with 2018 standards. A recent leak suggested Redmi S2’s retail price to be 3,999 VND in Vietnam, which translates to about $172. After its debut in China, Xiaomi is also expected to bring the mid-range Android smartphone to India later this month or early next month.
UPDATE: another image has surfaced in China (second image in the gallery down below), and this one even shows the phone, while it also mentions its release date.
