Amazon has unveiled the Fire TV Cube which comes with eight far-field microphones allowing users to reach Alexa from across the room with ease. Powered by Alexa the Fire TV Cube is Amazon’s latest entry into its Fire TV lineup, joining the Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, though it has one huge benefit over those two devices and that’s the fact that it doesn’t need the Alexa Voice Remote to actually interact with Alexa as the technology is built into the cube itself. The addition of the eight far-field microphones also makes it possible to speak to Alexa with more accuracy as your voice will be picked up from any direction.
With Alexa built-in the Fire TV Cube is Amazon’s first true hands-free product in this category. While it does come with the remote for you to control things by hand if you wish, this isn’t required. Simply speak to Alexa to start shows, turn off the lights, and turn up the temperature. The Fire TV Cube also has a speaker built-in so after you use it to find something you want to watch on TV, you can ask it about other important details like what the weather will be later in the week, or what trending news might be of interest. It’s essentially the Fire TV and Echo mixed into one product so if you already have an Echo speaker you can move it to another room in the home.
Fire TV Cube supports Dolby Atmos just like the Fire TV, but it comes with double the storage as Amazon bumped it up from 8GB to 16GB so you can download more content onto it. That bump and other included technology do come at a price though. The Fire TV Cube will cost $119.99, and it’s already available for pre-order over on Amazon with a release coming on June 21. The good news is that if you’re a Prime member you can save $30 bringing the price down to just $89.99.
