Possibly the first real-life images of Google’s Pixel 3 XL Android flagship appeared online earlier this week, having been shared by one frequenter of the XDA Developers boards. The two photographs that can be seen above are in line with recent rumors about the upcoming device, showing a prototype with a display notch and two front-facing cameras, though Google still appears to be resisting the trend of twin camera setups on the back. The handset also lacks Google’s “G” logo on the rear side and instead features a different marking in its place, with that design cue and the fact that its camera protrusion appears to have rough corners being indicative of a non-final product.
The notch cutting into the top of the supposed Pixel 3 XL’s display panel is deeper than other such cutouts found on the likes of the Huawei P20 and ASUS ZenFone 5 lineups, whereas it’s still unclear what the second camera might be used for. A more accurate facial recognition solution is a possibility, though the Pixel 3 XL still isn’t likely to feature a 3D camera akin to the one used by Apple’s iPhone X. The back panel of the device appears to be entirely covered with glass, as suggested by its glossy edges, with the top third of the plate featuring a transparent module, whereas the rest appears to be frosted glass with a matte-like effect. The main implication here is that wireless charging support isn’t out of the question as far as Google’s choice of body materials is concerned. One of the two leaked images also indicates the device is equipped with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage space.
The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are both expected to be manufactured by Foxconn, also the biggest iPhone contractor on the planet, which may address some quality control issues that troubled the first two generations of Google’s latest Android flagship lineup. With the Pixel and Pixel 2 series both being unveiled on October 4 of their respective years, early fall is also when the Pixel 3 family is widely expected to debut.
