A possible codename belonging to Google’s upcoming Pixel 3 Android flagship appeared in the database of the Android Open Source Project, with a commit dedicated to a new spam API mentioning testing being done on the “Blueline device.” The moniker is one of the three names attached to Google’s next Android smartphones last October when one industry insider claimed the company’s other two 2018 offerings have been code-named Albacore and Crosshatch. It’s presently unclear which particular model of the upcoming series is internally referred to as “Blueline” and if one of the three devices have been scrapped since last fall. While the product family should contain the Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, and a mid-range offering equipped with Qualcomm’s newly announced Snapdragon 710 chip, the lattermost device is understood to be code-named “Bonito.”
The Mountain View, California-based tech giant is expected to announce its next Android smartphones in the final quarter of the year, with the previous two generations of the company’s mobile devices being unveiled on October 4. The Pixel 3 should be larger than its predecessor and feature a 5.3-inch screen while ditching the 16:9 aspect ratio in favor of an 18:9 one, effectively looking like a smaller variant of the Pixel 2 XL. The Pixel 3 XL will instead have a 6.2-inch panel with a display notch leading to a 19:9 image format, according to recent rumors. Foxconn, Apple’s main iPhone manufacturer, is said to have been contracted to produce the upcoming devices, with the larger one supposedly featuring an LG Display-made OLED panel.
Besides two or three new Pixel-series handsets, Google’s 2018 hardware event should also see the introduction of the Pixel Buds 2 and a trio of Pixel-branded smartwatches running Wear OS, as per previous reports. Google’s consumer electronics push is hence set to continue, with the company also being expected to announce new smart speakers and Chromebooks in the near future.
