Huawei May Be Preparing Budget-Minded MediaPad C5 Tablet

Based on a recent listing at China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (CMIIT) and subsequent reports, Huawei may be working on a more budget-friendly alternative to its MediaPad M5 family of tablets. The device, listed under CMIIT approval number CMIIT-ID-2018CP1479, is allegedly linked to a pair of 8-inch tablets under the codename “Monet.” Those are tentatively expected to be marketed under the MediaPad C5 moniker, and the primary difference between the two seems to be that one will be 4G LTE-compatible while the other will not. It goes without saying that, at least for now, nearly every detail about this Android tablet is entirely speculative and there’s not much information that can be drawn from the current CMIIT listing.

Having said that, both MediaPad C5 devices should ship with identical internal specs aside from operator compatibility if the company follows its previous conventions for its budget tablets. The current expectation is that, as with some version of the MediaPad M5, this new tablet with feature an 8-inch display. If that’s the case the display of both could be set just above what’s typically referred to as “FullHD” with a resolution of 1200 x 1920. That will either be used to present buyers with Huawei’s own take on Android 8.0 Oreo or with Android 7.0 Nougat. That’s currently a toss-up but both are much more likely than any other version of Android at this point. Meanwhile, the whole system is suspected to be driven by a Snapdragon 435 SoC. Memory capacity being set at either 3GB or 4GB wouldn’t be out of the question, backed up by 64GB or 128GB of storage space. Bluetooth will, of course, be among the radios included alongside support for Wi-Fi and in addition to mobile connectivity on one of the two tablets.

There’s no way to know for sure whether or not the new tablet will be made available in the U.S. or any other region at this point. That’s also not impossible, given the recent launch of Huawei’s recent launch of its MediaPad M5 tablets in the region. In the meantime, pricing information and other pertinent details have also not been speculated at, as of this writing.
