Google has launched the June 2018 Android security patch for its Pixel-branded and select Nexus-series devices, with the OTA files and factory images now being available for download. The latest Android security patch addresses a total of 57 issues, including five critical vulnerabilities found in the media framework and the system portion of Google’s operating system. Moreover, the security patch also resolves the critical vulnerabilities located in the software components developed by smartphone manufacturer LG and those of semiconductor companies MediaTek and Qualcomm. Google maintains that the most severe security flaw fixed in this month’s security patch is a remote code execution vulnerability found in the media framework of the operating system. In addition, the software images developed for both Pixel and Nexus devices include additional security fixes that other device makers may choose to integrate into their own firmware.
Aside from resolving a variety of security issues, the latest firmware also includes performance improvements for Google’s Pixel flagships; it should improve the Bluetooth performance of the Pixel handsets and enhance Wi-Fi connectivity with certain access point types. In addition, the firmware also brings performance enhancements that are specific to the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL. The antenna switching behavior of both models in locations with weak cellular coverage should be improved following the update, while the software should deliver more consistent Always-On Display behavior and better proximity sensor performance of the larger Pixel 2 XL.
Interested users have the option of manually installing the software package by flashing either its factory images or the OTA update files, although T-Mobile subscribers who own the Pixel 2 or the Pixel 2 XL are asked to use the OTA images specific to the American carrier. The software build is identified by the version number OPM4.171019.021.E1. The search giant is also reminding users to back up the files and images before flashing the OTA images to prevent important data loss.
