After being available for pre-registrations for just over a month, Ubisoft Entertainment has finally launched its new mobile installment in the Might & Magic series. As a mobile title, Might & Magic: Elemental Guardians does break tradition with the series in several ways but it’s still very much a strategy RPG. Players take on the role of an apprentice Wizard at The Academy of Magic and explore the enchanted world of Ashan, with the goal of becoming the ultimate champion. Of course, things are a bit deeper than that and there’s a lot to discover and plenty of RPG-style battling to commence. Along the way, players collect fantasy creatures from the world of Might & Magic, training and evolving them to help in the fight. There are over 400 creatures to collect at launch and more will likely be added over time. Both the player and monsters level up and gain new abilities and stats along the way.
Setting those aspects of the game aside, there are several different modes to play at launch as well. Each mode centers around strategy and making the best use of a character or creature’s abilities. Players can take on the exploration mode for PvE action or head to the arena for PvP duels. The latter of those includes weekly rankings which range from Beginner to Master League and winners are awarded in-game prizes for their efforts. Meanwhile, live events are offered, as well, giving players a chance to earn even better rewards. A more immersive experience, on the other hand, can be had in the game’s AR mode. That’s available to both snap images with the game’s creatures or for viewing PvP battles. For cooperative play, users can join a Guild and go on quests.
Meanwhile, although there are in-app purchases for in-game currency, the title is completely free to play. Better still, the currency can be earned through any of the game modes, so it won’t necessarily devolve into the best players being determined by wallet size. Android 4.4 or newer is required but that’s not much of a caveat either. In fact, the only real drawback seems to be that the title is rated Mature 17+ for partial nudity.
