At least seven new Wear OS-enabled Fossil smartwatches have now passed through the FCC which appear to be linked to versions of a single smartwatch platform. That’s because each is filed under the designation “DW7” with slight variations under FCC ID UK7-DW7A and the description from Fossil backs that up. According to the watchmaker, the only real difference between any of the model designations is in terms of aesthetics and slight variation in the antenna gain. Although the designations themselves don’t necessarily give any information away, those are listed as DW7F1, DW7M1, DW7E1, DW7E2, DW7S1, DW7B1, and DW7T1. Aesthetically, the differences will span color configurations, strap material used, and chassis. That suggests they will be intended for different audiences with regard to gender and that variations of those will be made to suit various style preferences – what Fossil refers to as “marketing purposes.”
The FCC listing also denotes that there will be two schemas for device control on the physical side. That’s apart from the software-based touch controls which should be made available by the apparent operation on Google’s Wear OS platform as shown in the images below. The first of those is based on three buttons while another is based on a “scrollable” bezel. The latter of those might not be too dissimilar to a design patented by Huawei earlier this year or could indicate a bezel which spins. All seven of the listings also apparently supports NFC connectivity, which should indicate compatibility with Wear OS’s Google Pay API or support for other near-field communications such as data transferals. Aside from that, Bluetooth 4.2 and Wi-Fi connectivity are also included as part of the package.
It’s not possible at this juncture to determine other specifications for the smartwatches in question, although it has been speculated that these or associated listings for Fossil Models DW6 or DW8 might include Snapdragon SoCs under the hood. Those other two smartwatch designs are thought to be built on the same platform as the above-listed DW7 models. If true, they would be the first new Qualcomm-built wearable SoCs implemented in a smartwatch design in quite some time. However, for now, there’s no reason to expect that to be the case and no indications have been made either with regard to pricing or availability.
