Classic Shin Megami Tensei fans can now sign up for a notification when the new mobile spinoff, Liberation Dx2, is available to all. The game eschews the popular Persona franchise in favor of ushering in a mobile-friendly renaissance for the classic series, and brings some great graphics and features along for the ride that would only be able to fit into a single package on modern mobile devices. If you’re interested in collecting and battling demons, plunging into a faction war with the fate of Tokyo and the world hanging in the balance, or taking cheesy augmented reality photos of realistically-rendered demons, you’re definitely going to want to click on the Google Play button at the bottom of this article. The game is in closed beta right now, but will likely be out soon, since pre-registrations are open in the Play Store.
For those not in the know, Shin Megami Tensei Liberation Dx2 is a mobile-centric, distilled version of everything that makes the Shin Megami Tensei franchise so beloved. Demon lore, a deep story, amazing designs and iconic characters and fiends are all here, as is the Press Turn battle system seen in Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne and other games in the series. There’s an AR mode that plants 3D demon models in the real world, scaled up to a realistic size. Eligor, an imposing horseback knight, for instance, is a bit taller than an SUV, and in some houses with low ceilings, may have trouble finding headroom. There’s also an in-game chat, side quests, goals, and of course, a gacha system. Series classics like demon fusion and the compendium are also here to satisfy hardcore fans. You can read about it in more detail in our writeup about the closed beta.
Up until now, aside from a couple of Persona 3 spinoffs back in the WAP days, Atlus has largely left fans in the cold when it comes to mobile games. Jack Frost and his crew have been accessible via emulators and unofficial fan apps, and not much else. This US Play Store debut may mark a turning point for the series, depending on its success, but that’s purely speculative for the time being.
