Platform exclusives are nothing new and they will continue to be a staple in selling consoles and certain types of hardware. In this case, though, the exclusivity it being lifted for a particular title that used to be available only on Sony’s PlayStation VR. Moss, a whimsical and vibrant adventure that puts you in the shoes of a mouse named Quill on a journey to uncover the mysteries of an ancient magic and save your grandfather from a newly awakened evil, launched earlier this year for Sony’s virtual reality platform, and just this week it’s been ported over to Steam where it gains compatibility with the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift headsets. While just the fact that it’s now available to more VR headset owners is in and of itself a big accomplishment for the developers, it’s also a great thing for gamers.
Those with one of the two above-mentioned PC-based VR headsets can head over to steam and grab Moss for just $30, which is the same price as the game on PSN for those with a PSVR headset. Upon doing so, gamers can be transported into a lush world filled with exciting new things to explore, with proper support for tracked motion controllers and compatibility with both seated and standing positions. While it’s great to see that games are getting more attention and better distribution as it means more people can experience them, it also makes it more clear that exclusive titles are finally getting more exposure, and the more titles which break through exclusivity to reach other platforms the better the chances are that additional titles from various developers will do the same thing, which is great for the consumer.
Moving things back to Moss, this is a single player action game so it won’t be one you can play against others or with friends, but for those who enjoy the solitude of exploring new things at their own pace, there is a lot to love here with Moss. It should be especially entertaining for anyone who loves puzzle games as it is a puzzle platformer after all. That said, you aren’t just solving puzzles and the game utilizes every aspect of VR technology and transports you into a space that lets you do anything from battling enemies with your sword in hand to moving obstacles that may be blocking your path to a new location. The game also seeks to provide players with a compelling story to follow and characters with which they can form a bond and get to know, much like an RPG. It’s this type of deeper engagement with the game that will likely pull players into it and convince those who may be skeptical to give it more attention. If you’re thinking about picking this game up, regardless of the platform, it comes with support for nine different languages including English, Japanese, German, French, and Korean, and this applies to both the text and the audio, save for Korean which only has text and subtitles. Also worth noting is that if you’re thinking about grabbing this through Steam, you’ll need at least 8GB of RAM, 12GB of storage, and a minimum of an NVIDIA GTX 970 or AMD RX 480. You’ll need DirectX 11 and at least an Intel i5-6600k or AMD Ryzen 5 1400.
