Google is planning to follow up on the 2017 Pixelbook this fall and will be launching its new high-end Chromebook alongside the Pixel 3 lineup of Android flagships and other consumer electronics it intends to unveil at its annual hardware event, known industry insider Evan Blass claims. The company’s yearly product launch happening took place on October 4 of the last two years, with the new event hence being likely to take place around the same date. Save for the claim of smaller bezels being part of the package, no specific details about the Pixelbook 2 have yet been revealed and it’s still unclear whether the upcoming device will even use that name.
One thing that’s expected to remain unchanged between the first two generations of the Pixelbook is Google’s overall strategy behind investing in first-party Chrome OS devices. As is the case with the Pixel series of smartphones, the original Pixelbook was meant to be both a no-compromise device for the most demanding type of consumers and a reference point intended to help original equipment manufacturers create their own ultra-premium devices. As the second Pixelbook should follow suit, it’s also likely to be priced in a similar manner, i.e. start at around $999, depending on the market.
Besides the Pixelbook 2 and the Pixel 3 line, Google is also said to be preparing to launch its very first series of smartwatches at the same fall event. The wearables in question will be powered by Wear OS, formerly known as Android Wear, and most likely be introduced under the company’s existing Pixel brand. Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon Wear 3100 chip should be part of Google’s intelligent watch package, together with NFC and an always-on display, according to recent rumors. A new version of the Pixel Buds is also understood to be scheduled for a fall debut, though it’s presently unclear whether Google will use its upcoming event to introduce new Home-series smart speakers as well.
