Samsung has put out its own security bulletin for the July 2018 security patch that it will begin rolling out to its own devices in the coming days. Now Samsung doesn’t usually update every single device it has, each month. Typically, Samsung devices get a security update every other month or so. But the July 2018 security patch does include quite a few patches and fixes for different security threats in Samsung’s own smartphones. As always, these do include fixes that Google included in its own security patch that was announced yesterday.
As usual, Samsung does not go into great detail as to what was fixed in this update, as it doesn’t want to make that information public and put other smartphones at risk that don’t have the patch already installed. But there were a good number of bugs that were fixed, including some with the Secure Folder and the kernel with its MediaTek driver. Which that of course does not affect many Samsung smartphones, since most use Qualcomm or Exynos chipsets. In total, there were four critical exploits that were fixed, and about 20 high priority exploits and around 40 moderate priority exploits. The most of these are smaller ones that would take hackers a long time to figure out, but still needed to be fixed. So don’t look at all of these patches and think that your phone was completely unsecure before.
These security updates are pretty important for smartphones, as it’s going to keep you, your smartphone and your data safe. So when these updates do roll out to your device, make sure that you install it, instead of waiting and putting it off. These are important, if not more important than a software update. Samsung should begin rolling out the July 2018 update to mid-range devices in the next few days and move onto high-end devices afterwards.
