Typically smartphones appear at the FCC ahead of launch, but you don’t typically see the S Pen appear individually at the FCC. That is included with the Galaxy Note smartphone. But this time around, the S Pen has shown up at the FCC individually, and that is because it has a radio inside. The S Pen does have Bluetooth, and according to the FCC documents, it will connect to the Galaxy Note 9 over 2.4GHz Bluetooth LE. This shouldn’t use up a ton of battery life on the Galaxy Note 9 since it is using low energy Bluetooth, but still an interesting change here.
This S Pen has the model number EJ-PN960, which matches the Galaxy Note 9’s model number of SM-N960 that appeared at the FCC earlier this week as well. The FCC is referring to the EJ-PN960 as a “Stylus Pen” which is most likely the S Pen. However, the FCC does not indicate what the S Pen might be using Bluetooth for with the Galaxy Note 9. And that information likely won’t be announced until next month when Samsung officially unveils the Galaxy Note 9 in New York City. However, prolific leaker, Ice Universe, did speculate and say that Samsung may allow users to control things on their phone using the S Pen for things like music control or adjusting timers, using Bluetooth. Ice Universe has been on top of things when it comes to leaks, and haven’t been proven wrong yet, so while it’s important to take this with a grain of salt, he most likely is right.
Samsung will “unpack” the Galaxy Note 9 at its Unpacked event in Brooklyn next month. The date has been set for August 9 at the Barclay’s Center, so it’s going to be a pretty big event for Samsung and should be an interesting one to say the least. The Galaxy Note 9 is going to be one of the most anticipated devices of the fall, and likely one of the biggest sellers this fall as well.
