Samsung Is Working On A Galaxy F Series: Rumor

A prominent Twitter user under the username “@MMDDJ_” has now suggested that Samsung may be working on a new Galaxy F series. The leak follows earlier tweets indicating that the long-rumored Samsung Galaxy X may not be a foldable device at all, in spite of persistent rumors to the contrary. Although the tweet is notably short on any kind of details at all, the combination of rumors has led to some speculation that the ‘F’ in Galaxy F could point to Samsung’s as-yet-unannounced folding smartphone. Namely, it is suspected that the letter designation points to either the word “folding” or “flexible,” although there’s been no verification of that by either the company or any industry insiders. Whether or not that turns out to be the case, a Samsung Galaxy F series would be an entirely new family of devices under the Galaxy moniker.

If the speculative commentary surrounding the leak turns out to be correct the range of rumors surrounding Samsung’s folding smartphone vary far too much to pin down what might be on offer when it releases. That’s primarily because the Korean tech giant has been expected to release a folding display for several years now and has filed a huge number of patents pertaining to flexible panels. The most recent reports suggest that it might ship with a single display which folds on a hinge. That mechanism would remain mostly hidden and the overall aesthetic is said to resemble a more traditional flip phone design. Meanwhile, a portion of the display would remain visible to users, according to reports, allowing notifications and other pertinent information to show even when folded. The internals would almost certainly be somewhere between upper-midrange and flagship.

Having said that, there’s no way to know whether the ‘F’ actually stands for anything and Samsung has patented a large number of designs recently which don’t fold at all. Those have included everything from smartphones with multiple displays to bezel-free concepts that feature a miniature notch encompassing only the camera sensor. So there may not be anything to infer from the Samsung Galaxy F name. Beyond that, there’s been no indication from Samsung’s public documentation indicating the possible use of the newly rumored branding and the news could turn out to be completely inaccurate.
