StumbleUpon Formally Shuts Down, Replaced By Mix

More than a month after its co-creator announced that the service is shutting down, StumbleUpon officially ended its operations this Saturday, June 30. The development marks the end of the sixteen-year history of the service which launched back in 2002 to help users find interesting content on the internet with just a single click. Throughout its existence, the service helped more than 40 million users discover content, which resulted in more than 60 billion “stumbles.” However, the co-creator of the service, Garrett Camp, announced back in May that StumbleUpon will be shutting down so that the company can focus its resources on developing a new content curation tool called Mix.

Camp further noted in his announcement last month that the lessons learned throughout the existence of StumbleUpon influenced the creation and development of Mix. As opposed to StumbleUpon which focused primarily on finding content that could be of interest to users, Mix offers a streamlined way for them to organize the content that they like into what are called Mix Collections. These collections can be shared easily with friends and other users and should help people find interesting yet obscure content that is recommended by their friends. Furthermore, users can also follow third-party collections that they are interested in. Camp also stated in his announcement that Mix works with a wide variety of browsers and smartphones. The extensive compatibility of the service should help ensure the smooth transition of users from StumbleUpon to Mix and it also allows users to save content from any device or browser.

The co-creator of StumbleUpon also stated back in May that the service is already in the process of transitioning StumbleUpon accounts to the new platform. In fact, aside from using Google and Facebook to authenticate themselves, users can now log into the Mix website using their old StumbleUpon accounts. Individuals with StumbleUpon profiles have the ability to manually import their favorites, tags, and interests on StumbleUpon to create their Mix Collections.
