LG Opens New AI Research Facility In Toronto, Canada

LG Electronics recently announced the establishment of its new artificial intelligence (AI) research laboratory located in Toronto, Canada. This new facility serves as an extension to the tech firm’s existing research center in Santa Clara, California, and it will also supplement the ongoing AI research efforts of LG’s existing facilities in South Korea, India, and Russia. The establishment of the new research facility should help LG achieve its goal of developing AI solutions that not only offer consistent user experience across a wide variety of products but also continuously evolve to satisfy the needs of the user with the help of contextual data from voice, gestures, emotions, and biometrics.

Furthermore, LG Electronics also established a research partnership with the University of Toronto, an educational institution known for its expertise in artificial intelligence and machine learning. The school’s researchers have previously worked with other tech firms like Google and Uber in studies about artificial intelligence and computer vision. This collaboration is advantageous to both the tech firm and the educational institution since LG will benefit from the expertise of the researchers from the University of Toronto while the school’s faculty and staff will have the opportunity to work in the company’s facilities in North America. Aside from research institutions, LG is also planning to either partner with or invest in startups that develop artificial intelligence solutions.

LG is already incorporating its AI solutions in some of its product offerings. For example, the company’s most recent flagship handset offering, the LG G7 ThinQ, uses machine learning to enhance the quality of the images being captured by automatically adjusting the camera settings. The algorithms are based on the data gathered by LG from focus groups, feedback from users, and media coverage, and these models are stored in the device, which guarantees that the smartphone’s AI features will work offline. However, LG is also working to introduce its AI solutions to more products in the near future, which may include connected cars and appliances, as well as TV sets. In addition, LG is also investing in smart robotics firms like Acryl, Bossa Nova, Robostar, and SG ROBOTICS as part of the tech firm’s ThinQ AI strategy.
