LG has announced the new G7 ThinQ, which is full of all sorts of features that are powered by Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. But, LG has said that it does not collect any data from its users. LG doesn’t pull any logs either. All of the information it gathers to improve these features are from focus groups, the media’s coverage of the device(s), and feedback from users. All of the algorithms for these features are stored on the device itself, none of it will ever leave the G7 ThinQ and head to the cloud.
With the recent news surrounding Facebook and its data breach by Cambridge Analytica, it’s not surprising that LG is stressing the fact that it does not collect data. The company says that this is to ensure better privacy for its users, but with the algorithms being stored on the device itself, it also means that all of the AI features in the G7 ThinQ’s software will work offline. Allowing users to use these features even when there isn’t an Internet connection available. This allows users to have a better experience, since not everyone is always connected to the Internet, especially if you take the subway to/from work every single day, there will be parts of the day where there is no Internet connection. So being able to use these offline is a good thing to have.
Now where LG says it doesn’t collect data, that doesn’t mean that Google doesn’t. Google will still collect data from different Google services that are used on the G7 ThinQ, and that’s not exclusive to LG’s products, but any product that runs Google services. The information that Google collects allows it to create a better experience for users, but to also better target ads which drives in more revenue for Google and allows it to keep various services free for users. The LG G7 ThinQ does have a fair bit of artificial intelligence included, although the majority of it is within the camera or Google Assistant. The camera also has a good amount of machine learning included which is going to help you take better images without needing to adjust settings in the manual option in the camera app.
