MoviePass has had a rough few months. Being in the news quite a bit for things that no company wants to be in the news for – including running out of money in the middle of the night and forcing the app to go down. Recently MoviePass debuted a new plan that would limit the number of movies customers could see in a month to just three. Now when MoviePass launched, members were able to watch a movie every day of the month – about 30 movies, give or take. Now that is being cut to just three, and those that did pay for a yearly membership are being forced onto that new plan. While this sounds bad, MoviePass actually reserves the right to change its plans at any time.
MoviePass is sending out emails to its users, stating that “We want to thank you for being a loyal member of our annual MoviePass plan. Your commitment to MoviePass has contributed to making our vision for an accessible and affordable moviegoing experience a reality.” It continues to talk about how MoviePass experimented with different models and option, “we believe that our current monthly plan captures the need of our community”. Which includes keeping prices low while offering a wider selection of films. Remember that this new plan also keeps users from seeing some of the bigger movies out there – like big franchise movies including Mission Impossible: Fallout. Which definitely makes the plan a lot less attractive.
Annual subscribers can choose to either accept the new plan and be limited to just three movies per month, and no big movies on launch weekends. Or they can choose to get a prorated refund. Which is going to take a few weeks to get processed and sent out. It’s unfortunate that MoviePass has come to this. But at least there are some other options out there for those that do like to watch a lot of movies – like AMC’s A-List that debuted a few months ago.
