On Tuesday, Nest and Google announced that the Nest x Yale Lock is getting Google Assistant support. This smart lock – forged from the partnership between Nest and Yale – will now work with Google Assistant, so you can use your voice to lock and unlock your front door. The Google Assistant can also be used to check the status of the lock, and even lock it remotely. This can be very useful if you happen to have forgotten to lock your door before you left for work. You can use your Google Home Mini at work to lock your door and keep your home nice and safe. Nest and Google say that this support works with Google Assistant on your smartphone as well as in Google Home. And, you can also add this to a routine. So for example, you could lock the door automatically by saying “Hey Google, Goodnight.”
The Nest x Yale Lock was unveiled back in January, as a smart lock that was made by Yale, but infused with some of Nest’s software. Yale is one of the biggest lock makers in the world, so it does have plenty of experience in making some decent locks for your home and keeping you safe. And with Nest, it’s going to work well with Nest’s other products like the Learning Thermostat or Detect. The Nest x Yale Lock is a keyless lock, that uses a keypad to allow people into your home. This is actually pretty useful, seeing as you can create a code for someone to get in, and have it set to expire after they get into your home. Useful for letting in FedEx or UPS, or even the house sitter while you’re on vacation.
Google Assistant support for the Nest x Yale Lock should be rolling out now. You will see a software update coming soon to the app that will allow it to work with Google Assistant, and from there you’ll be able to use your voice to control the lock.
