Sony is taking its athlete-focused audio offerings to the next level with the WF-SP900, a new pair of earbuds that are both waterproof and truly wireless. Unveiled earlier today, the in-ear headphones have been designed to offer maximum freedom during sports and general workouts, with the gadget being capable of fully standalone functionality thanks to the inclusion of 4GB of storage space. The sturdy build should also keep the WF-SP900 earbuds positioned firmly in one’s ears even during frantic workout sessions, with Sony advertising the extreme versatility of the gadget as its main selling point.
Besides Bluetooth, the WF-SP900 also support NFC and can deliver up to three hours of playback time on a single charge while streaming music from a PC or smartphone, or twice as much during standalone operation. The charging case that comes bundled with the in-ear headphones allows for up to 12 and 21 hours of connected and standalone autonomy, respectively. In most respects, the WF-SP900 are largely seeking to compete with Samsung’s Gear IconX (2018) and Apple’s AirPods, seeking to provide a similar wire-free option for high-quality audio and ennobling it with the addition of IP6X-certified elements resistance that makes them submergible up to two meters and even washable.
The sound quality on offer is said to be exceptional, powered by Sony’s proprietary Balanced Armature drivers, whereas native support for Google Assistant and Apple’s Siri is on offer as well. The WF-SP900 are scheduled to start retailing in November, starting at £250 in the United Kingdom, though their U.S. pricing and availability details are yet to be clarified. Sony took to this year’s IFA to unveil a range of new audio offerings, the vast majority of which are set to compete in the premium segment of the market, with the WF-SP900 earbuds being no exception. The company also used the Berlin-based trade show as an opportunity to introduce its latest Android smartphone in the form of the Xperia XZ3.
