Project Fi has announced that it is going to be ending support for text forwarding on its network next month, beginning on September 12. This means that texts will no longer be forwarded from one number to another, however, Project Fi has mentioned that Call Forwarding will continue to work as expected. Project Fi is emailing its customers to let everyone know that text forwarding support will be ending on September 12, and also letting everyone know to double-check the numbers that are associated with their Project Fi account, so that they don’t miss out on any text messages when the switch is flipped on September 12.
Text forwarding is a feature that many people likely don’t use, or perhaps didn’t even know it existed. But it does work well for those that do use multiple phone numbers, so that you can get text messages from multiple numbers, onto one device. Giving you a unified inbox, which is a nice feature to have. Having this feature with Call forwarding, was a big part of Google Voice, so one has to wonder if Google may be dropping text forwarding from Google Voice in the future too.
Project Fi is a MVNO service from Google, that works on T-Mobile, Sprint and US Cellular networks here in the US. It will actually connect to WiFi first, and then if there’s no WiFi or hotspots available, connect to one of those three networks. This allows you to use less data, and save even more on your monthly bill. Since it is $30 per month without data, and each gigabyte is $10. Whatever data you don’t use, you get refunded which is definitely nice to see. Since you don’t always use the same amount of data each month, and it’s good to know that money isn’t being wasted. If you do utilize text forwarding, make sure to get everything straightened out before September 12.
