For the second year in a row now, Samsung’s Galaxy Note ships with a dual-camera setup, but this time around, it offers even more improvements in the imaging segment. The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 sports the brilliant dual-aperture mechanism for its main 12-megapixel camera, giving it the ability to switch between an f/1.5 and an f/2.4 aperture depending on lighting conditions. Samsung utilizes the f/2.4 aperture for anything above 100 lux, keeping lens distortion down and depth of field deep, while it switches over to f/1.5 when the lighting drops under 100 lux to help bring more light into the already large smartphone camera sensor.
In addition to bringing this amazing technology over from the Galaxy S9 series, Samsung is introducing an awesome new feature for its S-Pen: Bluetooth remote control. While this isn’t necessarily a camera feature in and of itself, it enhances the camera experience in a very significant way. With the ability to press that S-Pen button up to 10 meters away, you’ll now be able to place the phone down somewhere and remotely launch the camera, even if the phone is locked. This in addition to the ability to switch between front and rear cameras, and, of course, even activate the shutter to take a picture. This sort of thing will work wonders for those awkward group shots, which often require a timer or some other mechanism that can only be done once, while the S-Pen will allow you to take multiple shots at once without a fuss.
Then there’s also the new ability to record video in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, matching the highest quality recording on the market with phones like the OnePlus 6 and the HTC U12+. This brings about not only ultra sharp video but also ultra smooth video recording, jumping into a new realm of quality for a Samsung device. H.265 support has been added as well, increasing efficiency significantly and reducing file size by an average of 30% or so; something that’s particularly important with the size of 4K60 videos.
