A new variation of the Huawei Mate 20 has now reportedly cropped up bearing the model designation ‘EVR-xxxx’ and possibly tied to a device internally referred to by employees as “Everest,” according to a new leak from Roland Quandt. Current speculation surrounding Everest seems to indicate that it will be either a Porsche Design Huawei Mate 20 or just a larger variation on the designs expected to launch in October. The naming convention in use also appears to suggest that it would be the latter of those, with consideration for the codenames used for the Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro – “Hima” and “Laya,” respectively. Moreover, a rumor also surfaced back in June that the OEM would be releasing its Mate 20 Pro sporting a flat 6.9-inch display panel supplied by Samsung. So that may very well be what this newly leaked device will be if the leak is accurate.
Regardless of how Huawei might choose to market its handset, if either scenario is true there are some other aspects of previous leaks that may need to be reconsidered. For starters, the current expectation is that both the Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro will ship with a HiSilicon Kirin 980 SoC backed up by 6GB of RAM. There’s not a lot that could be done to improve on that chipset since it is currently marketed as the most powerful chip Huawei offers and was only just unveiled at IFA 2018. There have, however, been leaks suggesting that the Huawei Mate 20 will ship in a 4GB configuration as well and that might be the differentiator. Everest may, for example, be the 8GB handset that was originally suspected of being the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. Storage capacity is another area where differentiation could be created, with prior leaks suggesting that might start at 64GB of storage and push all the way up to 512GB. Huawei’s EMUI 9 – based on Android 9 Pie – is expected to be a part of the package as well.
With that said, there have been conflicting reports about the remaining specifications and even regarding the screen size that either confirmed handset will arrive with. Huawei won’t be revealing all of the details for approximately another month, in the meantime and hasn’t given any indication that a third Mate 20-branded smartphone would be arriving. It has also already taken the wraps off of the Huawei Mate 20 Lite, so it’s very unlikely that this Huawei phone bears any real relation to that.
