AT&T Debuts Unlimited Plan For First Responders [Updated]

Update: AT&T reached out to us to clarify a few things. Firstly, it’s FirstNet program is the program that most First Responders use for their work phone, and those plans are not throttled. First Responders typically carry a second phone, which would be using this plan highlighted below. AT&T is still citing that it will throttle speeds during congested times to make sure the network is still running properly, but that won’t be on First Responders’ work phones.

AT&T has debuted a new unlimited plan, that is designed for first responders, though AT&T seemed to have missed the point here, as it says in the fine print that it can still throttle these users. Verizon got into hot water a few weeks back, after it was made public that it had throttled the data of some firefighters while they were battling the wildfires in California. This was bad because they were unable to use their phones – but Verizon had also said that it was waving charges for those in the area, and giving unlimited talk, text and data to everyone. So Verizon debuted a plan that did not throttle. AT&T seemed to have followed suite, but not quite.

The plan in question is going to be $60 per month. It includes unlimited talk, text and data, and that includes Mexico and Canada. Users will also get unlimited text in over 120 countries. There are also going to be 30 live TV channels and on-demand titles available, and customers can choose one of the seven entertainment perks that come with Unlimited &More Premium plans. That includes the choice of HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, Starz, VRV, Amazon Music or Pandora Premium. Now in the fine print, it notes that video will be limited to standard definition or about 480p resolution. It also says “AT&T may temporarily slow data speeds when the network is congested.” That is where the problem is, for many first responders. When it’s congested, that’s when first responders will need the data the most.

Those that are first responders, can save 25-percent on this plan, and their families are eligible as well. However, this is only available in-store, so you cannot sign up online unfortunately. AT&T is also giving first responders $15 off of DIRECTV NOW and/or $15 off of AT&T Internet service. So there’s more savings here for first responders, than just mobile service.
