Google has started rolling out a new update to the Google Photos app, we’re looking at v4.0 here, and as part of this update, you will receive a UI refresh. This UI refresh is not a surprise, at all, as Google has already redesigned a couple of its applications, including Android Messages, Phone, and Contacts, in order to go in line with Android 9 Pie, its latest mobile operating system.
Now, the moment you open the app, after installing this update, you will notice that the app is even whiter than it was before, even though it was plenty white as it is, but now its icons on the bottom lack depth, they’re simpler than ever before, and the whole UI seems somewhat different. As far as layout itself is concerned, everything seems to be where it was before, you still have four options at the bottom of the display, including Photos, Albums, Assistant and Sharing, while the search bar and the hamburger menu are located the top, along with more options and the cast option. There is one functional change, though, you can now swipe-up when you’re checking out a photo in order to see info of that photo, including time and location when it was taken, camera settings, and so on. Other than that, changes are purely aesthetic.
There you have it, another app that goes in line with Android 9 Pie. You will either love or hate this change, but chances are you won’t be bothered that much, as it looks quite similar to the previous version of Google Photos. Whichever may be the case, you can expect more Google apps to adapt its design to Android 9 Pie moving forward, and basically become whiter than ever, as Google is removing plenty of color from its apps as part of this next-gen design. It’s safe to say that Gmail will receive such an overhaul in the near future, and the same can be said for YouTube, and a number of other Google-made apps.
