Honkai Impact 3rd is a structured, anime-themed 3D beat-em-up character action piece for the Bayonetta crowd. The game boasts a small cast of characters compared to its contemporaries, but each character has a number of variants with different strengths, abilities, and special secondary modes that change their move sets and boost their attack capabilities. The game’s combat is where it really shines, and if you’re a fan of the genre, you’ll be hooked from the first blow. As a bonus, there’s a surprisingly deep storyline on board that incorporates a majority of the characters that you can earn from the game’s gacha system.
First, you’ll choose a character, variant, and some equipment and passive skill attachments. Once you’ve done that, it’s off to the battlefield. You’ll be swarmed by foes from all sides in this fully 3D game – no isometric perspective here, as seen in most action RPGs and MMORPGs on Android – and you’ll have to figure out the best way to string together combos and set up all sorts of deadly skills to get rid of them. The action is slick and satisfying, and each character has a feel and a learning curve all their own. If you like Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, Bounty Hounds and other games like them, you’re going to love this one. It may not be quite as grandiose as its console counterparts, but the adrenaline-pumping action, complex move sets and possibility for seriously complicated and perfectly executed skill combos is all there. Outside of combat, you can use a gacha system to score new characters, weapons, items, and accessories. There’s even a cute dorm room feature, where you can customize a room for your characters and watch them hang out in it.
This is easily among the top contenders for action RPGs on Android, though it focuses more on the action since battles are arranged in levels. The game differentiates itself from the likes of Kritika and Dawn Break Origins in the Play Store through extensive character customization and in-stage action that’s every bit as beautiful as it is satisfyingly punchy. You’ll feel the blows when they land, and if you slip up and let your character get hurt, you’ll know it. If you’re the type who turns their nose up at all the casual fare that mobile gaming is known for and you want something a bit more hardcore, hit the Play Store button below and give Honkai Impact 3rd a go.
