In short: Nearly six years after T-Mobile purchased MetroPCS, it has decided to rebrand the prepaid carrier, and it is now “Metro by T-Mobile”. It gets a brand new logo, and also some newer plans. T-Mobile has infused these new plans with Amazon Prime and Google One (for cloud storage), adding more perks while keeping the prices the same. There is now a $50 and $60 plan, that offer truly unlimited data, with 5GB and 15GB of LTE speed for mobile hotspot, respectively. They also both include Google One (though T-Mobile is not mentioning how much storage you get with these plans)The $60 plan also comes with Amazon Prime so you can get fast two-day shipping included with your phone plan.
MetroPCS’ coverage has vastly improved since 2013, when it covered just over 100 million people. Now it can cover over 323 million people, and that’s due to T-Mobile’s network getting much better and covering even more people. Metro By T-Mobile also offers a variety of smartphones, from both Android and iOS. So no matter what type of smartphone user you are, Metro By T-Mobile has something for you.
Background: T-Mobile acquired MetroPCS back in October of 2012, it was one of the first major decisions that CEO John Legere made after taking the company over in September of 2012. By acquiring MetroPCS, T-Mobile was able to nearly double its customer-base, and also leverage the spectrum that MetroPCS had. Over the years, many wondered whether T-Mobile would get rid of MetroPCS, rebrand it, or do something else. And now six years later, it’s finally rebranded to simply “Metro”.
Impact: T-Mobile is aiming to bring more competition to the prepaid space, and that is exactly what is happening right now with this rebranding, by offering a few more plans for its customers, with some more added freebies. Those that want to make the switch to Metro By T-Mobile can do so, starting soon, at one of over 10,000 Metro By T-Mobile stores across the country.
