Several variants of Huawei’s recent flagship devices will likely get Android 9 Pie soon after the Wi-Fi Alliance recently certified multiple models of the Huawei P20, the P20 Pro, the Mate 10, and the Mate 10 Pro that run the latest version of the operating system. Among the handset variants that the Wi-Fi Alliance recently tested include ALP-L09 and ALP-L29 of the Mate 10, BLA-L09 and BLA-L29 of the Mate 10 Pro, CLT-L09 and CLT-L04 of the P20 Pro, EML-L09 and EML-L29 of the P20, and NEO-L29 of the Mate RS Porsche Design. According to the website of the Wi-Fi Alliance, all of these handsets run Huawei’s proprietary skin, EMUI 9.0, on top of Google’s operating system.
Huawei has also recently launched its own Android 9 Pie beta program, and the P20, the P20 Pro, the Mate 10, and the Mate 10 Pro are among the devices eligible for this beta program. This program was first launched in China, although it was later expanded to include devices in Europe earlier this month. However, the number of beta slots available in Europe is currently limited to 100 users per country. Even though the Shenzhen-based smartphone manufacturer has yet to provide a timeline that details the distribution of the software upgrade, it is likely that Huawei will start deploying the operating system update this fall.
Android 9 Pie includes a number of useful features, including the Adaptive Battery and Adaptive Brightness features. The Adaptive Battery feature uses machine learning to determine the resources allocated to each application, which could improve the battery life of the device, while the Adaptive Brightness feature also takes advantage of artificial intelligence to fine-tune the brightness of the display depending on the location of the user. Meanwhile, Huawei also added its own features into its proprietary skin, EMUI 9.0. These functionalities include the GPU Turbo 2.0, a technology that improves graphics performance and power-efficiency of the GPU, and the Natural UX. EMUI 9.0 also brings faster app launching, enhanced object recognition, a password vault, and a “helpful AI” that could provide travel assistance to its users. Huawei will reveal more details about the latest version of its proprietary skin, and likely on the deployment of Android 9 Pie updates, on October 16.
