Pixelworks has just announced that the all-new Black Shark Helo smartphone utilizes its video and mobile display processing technology. The company says that its technology will improve the gaming quality on the phone in general, as it will provide you with better visuals overall. The device comes with Pixelworks’ third-generation Iris mobile processor, and that processor is here to improve display performance by boosting / balancing sharpness, color contrast, and accuracy of the Black Shark Helo smartphone. Pixelworks’ tech works in conjunction with the Black Shark Helo’s 5.99-inch fullHD+ (2160 x 1080) AMOLED panel, which comes with P3 color gamut. The device also features Pixelworks’ HDR technology, including real-time SDR-to-HDR conversion, and picture quality enhancement, all with the goal to boost the overall gaming experience on the Black Shark Helo.
Background: Pixelworks has been around for quite some time now, over two decades at this point, and the company has released a number of display-related tech in that time span. The company’s HDR technology is capable of 1M:1 contrast ratio with a 10x improvement in color accuracy, and also auto-adaptive to ambient light, claims the company. The company’s MEMC (motion estimation, motion compensation) processing tech enables ultra-smooth streaming (up to 60FPS), while it also eliminates judder and motion blur. Pixelworks’ tech also adjusts colors, calibrates the display, and it features advanced scaling in order to maintain the fidelity of images presented on the display.
Black Shark, on the other hand, is a company which had obtained an investment from Xiaomi, and this is the second smartphone that the company has released since that investment. The Black Shark Helo is quite a powerful phone which is focused on gaming, and it actually features Dual Liquid Cooling. The phone itself features a 6.01-inch fullHD+ AMOLED display, and it is fueled by the Snapdragon 845 64-bit octa-core processor. The device was announced in 6GB, 8GB, and 10GB RAM variants, while it comes with Android 8.1 Oreo, and Joy UI on top of it. There are two SIM card slots included in this phone, while the device packs in a 4,000mAh battery, and it supports Quick Charge 3.0. 12 and 20-megapixel cameras are located on the back of this phone, while a single 20-megapixel camera sits on its front side. The device’s pricing starts at 3,199 Yuan ($416), and it is available for pre-order in China as we speak, though there’s still no word on international availability.
Impact: Pixelworks’ technology was a part of the very first Black Shark smartphone which was introduced back in April this year, and the two companies have decided to continue their cooperation for the new devices as well. The Black Shark Helo is a powerful handset, no doubt about that, and is here to compete with other gaming phones out there, like the Razer Phone 2, and Red Magic handsets. It is also worth noting that the Black Shark Helo’s design has been updated considerably since the first-generation unit, so it may appeal to consumers more because of it, but we’ll see what will happen.
