An upcoming Samsung device which seemingly features a display notch was recently benchmarked with AnTuTu and Geekbench under the model number SM-M205F. The device is believed to belong to a brand new series of smartphones and hit the shelves as the Samsung Galaxy M2. The inclusion of an Exynos 7885 chipset featuring a Mali-G71 MP2 graphics chip strongly suggests that the unit will fit in the mid-range market. Other details include a 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, as well as Android 8.1 Oreo on the software side, but as it’s been established by the majority of Samsung’s smartphones in the past, the OS will likely be coupled with the OEM’s proprietary UI. The screen resolution of 2,340 by 1,080 pixels hints that the smartphone will employ a new design embracing a display notch, but its exact shape is unclear at present.
According to reports, Samsung intends to replace the existing Galaxy On series with the upcoming Galaxy M models. Reportedly there will be more than one, and the Galaxy M2 will end up being paired with a better-equipped Galaxy M3 as well as a top-tier model called the Galaxy M5. As yet no hardware details have emerged in regards to these two other variants but their alleged monikers hint that they should overtake the Samsung Galaxy M2 in terms of hardware prowess. Samsung recently showcased three new Infinity display designs employing a display notch, so the OEM’s intentions to adopt this particular characteristic for some of its mobile devices have been officially confirmed. The Samsung Galaxy M2 is said to be the first device from the new series to hit the shelves before the Galaxy M3 and M5, and in turn, this could make it the OEM’s first smartphone to adopt a display notch. On stage at SDC 2018, the company showcased the Infinity-U, Infinity-V, and Infinity-O notched display designs set to be commercialized in the future, and the Samsung Galaxy M2 could employ one of these panels. The Infinity-U and Infinity-V have a more conventional design with a notch positioned in the middle, while the Infinity-O has a circular notch placed near the corner of the display. At SDC the OEM also claimed that the arrival of these panels is “just around the corner” and with the Galaxy M2 already being benchmarked online, it’s likely that an official unveiling of the phone is not far into the future.
