A recent FCC application issued by a regulatory agency in Brazil for a Motorola Mobility product seems to have revealed one of the final puzzle pieces surrounding the Moto G7 – its battery capacity. According to the documents passed along by TigerMobiles, the upcoming device will have a 2,820mAh battery which will be supplied by Amperex. This would mean that, on paper, the Moto G7 will have a slightly lower-capacity battery compared to its predecessor which was equipped with a 3,000mAh unit. On the other hand, it’s possible that the OEM will round up this exact figure to 3,000mAh. Whether the Moto G7 will be marketed as having a 2,820mAh or 3,000mAh battery remains to be seen, but the new reveal at least confirms that the upcoming model won’t offer many changes in regards to this particular hardware characteristic when compared to its direct predecessor.
The Moto G series is probably one of the most successful mobile lineups in the Lenovo-owned company’s portfolio, and the G7 is expected to launch next year, likely around the time Mobile World Congress kicks off in late February. The device was already approved by the FCC in the United States last week and according to preliminary specifications, the Moto G7 will make the jump from a Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 chipset to the newer Snapdragon 660 SoC. In theory, this makes the newer silicon solution better in terms of battery life management which might make the Moto G7 last longer than its predecessor on a single charge despite a slightly lower battery capacity. However, according to some information that emerged last week, the Moto G7 could also have a considerably larger display compared to the Moto G6 (6.57-inch versus 5.7-inch), and screen size is one of the main variables affecting a smartphone’s autonomy. Having said that, only time will tell if a 2,820mAh battery will be enough for the upcoming model to provide better or equal battery life compared to this year’s model.
This October, it was rumored that the Moto G7 will be launched in a total of four variants: a base model and three other versions differentiated by the “Play,” “Plus,” and “Power” names. Given the history of the Moto G6 lineup, all of these other models – or at least the Moto G7 Play and G7 Plus – should have higher-capacity batteries compared to the standard variant. The Play- and Plus-branded devices are almost certain to happen given that these variations already exist for the ongoing model, but as yet, little is known about the so-called Moto G7 Power. The series is expected to adopt a display notch in the shape of a water drop and introduce a considerably more modern design compared to the Moto G6 series.
