Samsung may be developing a new line of devices to release under the ‘Galaxy G‘ branding, based on a fairly cryptic tweet from a known insider that was recently spotted by Android Headlines. Specifically, the tweet only includes the term ‘Galaxy G’, providing no further illumination on the matter whatsoever. That seems to indicate that a new line of devices is forthcoming but details about a Galaxy G handset or tablet are virtually nonexistent elsewhere on the web. Furthermore, no “Galaxy G” hardware appears to have shown up in rumors or leaks either and, for the time being, there actually aren’t any Samsung devices that have been released under the Galaxy G moniker.
Background: It isn’t out of the question that the Galaxy G-series could be referring to handsets released under the long-running “Galaxy Grand” branding. Recent reports have suggested that the company is already working to consolidate its other Galaxy-branded offerings under more clearly defined marketing. The change would result in the Galaxy ‘J’, ‘C’, and ‘Galaxy ON’ devices being sold under the ‘Galaxy M‘ designation. As a result, nearly all budget-friendly handsets would be brought together under a single branding while the mid-range Galaxy A handsets would continue to be marketed under that brand. Samsung Galaxy Grand devices could fall into that same budget categorization but haven’t historically been sold under any letter-specific branding. Instead, those have been sold as under more difficult to quantify model names like the ‘Galaxy Grand Prime’ or ‘Galaxy Grand Prime Pro’.
The most recently speculated device in that family is the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime Plus (2018). That’s been expected to launch since mid-July. Based on leaks about that budget smartphone, that new take on the series will feature a 5.5-inch 540 x 960 display and be powered by a Samsung-built Exynos 7870 chipset. That’s an octa-core SoC powered by Cortex A53 64-bit CPUs and backed by a Mali-T830 GPU. For cameras, the new Galaxy Grand Prime Plus will reportedly include a Samsung built 5-megapixel sensor with iris-scanning capabilities on the front and a 16-megapixel primary snapper with 4K and 240fps slow-motion capabilities. Power will be provided by a 3,630mAh battery that charges via USB Type-C.
Impact: Whether or not the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime Plus (2018) or some other model will kick off a new ‘Galaxy G’ naming convention isn’t immediately clear. Samsung may intend to go a completely different direction with the branding but the change would seem to make the most sense for the Galaxy Grand series. For clarity, it isn’t difficult to discern which handset is likely better — or at least newer — by looking at years that have been assigned to a model designation. The challenge arises from the use of names such as “Galaxy Grand Prime” or “Galaxy Grand Duos,” with additional descriptive words frequently being included to differentiate the gadgets. Releasing those handsets under easier to read model names like “Galaxy G30” or “Galaxy G40” more clearly shows a hierarchy for that smartphone family.
