Recently leaked photographs of a number of cases designed for the Huawei P30 and the Huawei P30 Pro provide additional information about the design of the upcoming flagship smartphones of the Chinese tech giant. Based on the leaked case designs, users may find the rear camera setups of the two devices at the upper right-hand corner of the handsets’ back panel. However, the two handsets seem to differ in the location of the LED Flash. In the Huawei P30, users will likely find the LED flash in the oval cutout placed below the rear camera setup, while the Huawei P30 Pro will likely utilize a double flash setup located inside the vertical cutout beside the handset’s rear shooters. In addition, one of the industry insiders who leaked the case designs noted that the Huawei P30 Pro will likely sport four cameras at the back of the handset. However, there is little information available about the rear shooter setup of the Huawei P30.
Cases for both the Huawei P30 and the P30 Pro do not include cutouts for the rear fingerprint sensor, which could mean that the device may instead utilize facial recognition or in-display fingerprint scanners for biometric authentication. Furthermore, an industry insider suggests that both devices will not include a 3.5-millimeter headphone jack. The leaked cases show that the bottom of the P30 and the P30 Pro will have the loudspeaker and the USB Type-C port. Meanwhile, the right side of the device will likely contain the volume buttons and a power key.
Background: The Huawei P30 and the P30 Pro will be the first flagship handsets that Huawei will launch in the coming year, and the chief executive officer of the Chinese tech giant’s consumer electronics unit, Richard Yu, already confirmed this moniker in a recent interview. The device’s predecessor, the P20 series, was released on March 27 earlier this year, and Huawei will reportedly announce the two handsets next spring, possibly at the Mobile World Congress 2019.
Rumors indicate that the two devices will sport the Kirin 980 chipset. This SoC is manufactured using the 7nm process node technology, offers 20-percent performance improvement, especially in app launches and computational tasks, and up to a 40-percent increase in power efficiency, compared to the Kirin 970 chipset found in the Huawei P20. Furthermore, the Huawei P30 will also likely improve on the functionalities already present in its predecessor, which include intelligent scene recognition and integrated features powered by artificial intelligence. Moreover, users should also expect that Huawei’s proprietary skin, EMUI, will run on top of Google’s operating system.
Impact: It will still be a few more months before Huawei launches the Huawei P30 and the P30 Pro, although consumers may expect more information about the devices will become available soon. It is also interesting to see if the improvements made to the P30 and the P30 Pro, not only in terms of chipset performance but also in terms of hardware specifications and software features, are large enough to convince users to upgrade their smartphones remains to be seen.
