Metadata found in the OTA updates from HMD Global reveals that the Nokia 9 PureView will sport the Snapdragon 845 chipset. Qualcomm released the Snapdragon 845 SoC in December 2017, and it features an octa-core Kryo 385 CPU and the Adreno 630 GPU. Previous reports state that the handset will not sport the latest flagship chipset from the American semiconductor form, and this new leak corroborates the information provided by the earlier leaks. Aside from confirming the chipset that will power the Nokia 9 PureView, the leaked metadata did not provide any additional information about the device’s specifications. However, it did show that the handset is running Android 9 Pie with the December 2018 Android security patch.
Background: Multiple leaks of the Nokia 9 PureView were released over the past few months and HMD Global originally intended to release the smartphone within the year. However, problems encountered during the development and production of the device forced HMD Global to delay the release the smartphone, a move that reportedly angered many employees of the handset maker since it will result in the company facing competition that offers similarly-priced devices with more advanced processing technologies.
Multiple leaks already detailed the design and specifications of the device. One of the defining design features of the Nokia 9 PureView is its Penta-camera setup, which is contained in five of the seven cutouts located on the rear panel of the device. There is limited information available regarding the sensors incorporated into the five rear cameras, although it is likely that the smartphone will utilize ZEISS Optics. The LED flash also occupies another one of the cutouts at the handset’s back. Previous leaks also show that the Nokia 9 PureView will not feature a 3.5-millimeter headphone jack, although it will reportedly come with a USB type-C port located at the bottom of the device along with the loudspeaker and a microphone. The right side of the device, on the other hand, contains both the power button and the volume rockers.
Aside from the design of the device, previous rumors also revealed some of the specifications of the Nokia 9 PureView. The handset will reportedly feature a 5.9-inch display with an aspect ratio of 18:9 and a resolution of 2,160 by 1,080 pixels, and it is expected to include a single camera at the front. Furthermore, rumors indicate that the smartphone will have a length of 155 millimeters, a width of 75 millimeters, and a thickness of 7.9 millimeters, and that the device will likely have 6GB of RAM. According to previous reports, the handset is expected to support Qi wireless charging and it is also rumored to have an in-display fingerprint sensor. Like the other products of the device maker, the Nokia 9 PureView will launch as a part of Google’s Android One program, which means that the smartphone will quickly and consistently receive software upgrades and security patches.
Impact: With the latest information somewhat confirming that the device will ship with Snapdragon 845 chipset, HMD Global might find it difficult to sell significant quantities of its upcoming device offering when it is launching with an older SoC while still asking for a premium price. HMD Global already admitted recently that its flagship device offerings significantly underperformed, and it is yet to be seen if the Nokia 9 PureView will help reverse the company’s fortunes at the premium segment of the smartphone market.
