OnePlus and McLaren have just announced a new, special edition variant of the OnePlus 6T, the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition also known as “Speed Orange” variant. This handset got announced in the UK, during the press conference, and it’s actually more powerful than your regular OnePlus 6T handset, as rumors suggested. Regarding new features, the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition debuts “Warp Charge 30”, which is an ever faster charging than the one included in the regular OnePlus 6T. The regular OnePlus 6T ships with 20W fast charging which is one of the fastest out there, but the company has decided to improve upon that in this special edition unit, and bump it up to 30W. OnePlus claims that this new charging tech will give you a day’s power in just 20 minutes. On top of that, same as with the tech used in the OnePlus 6T, the company claims that charging the phone will not slow it down, or generate excessive heat.
That’s not the only notable change compared to the regular OnePlus 6T, though, as the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition comes with 10GB of RAM, while the regular OnePlus 6T comes with either 6GB or 8GB of RAM. In fact, this is the very first OnePlus-branded smartphone to ship with 10GB of RAM. As far as storage is concerned, this phone packs in 256GB of internal storage, same as the top-end OnePlus 6T. In order to differentiate this phone from the regular model, OnePlus included McLaren’s Papaya Orange color on the edges of the phone’s back, as they fade into the black color, which is predominant on the device. The pattern you’ll notice underneath the glass on this phone is based on McLaren’s carbon fiber, which is also something that differentiates this phone. McLaren’s carbon fiber has first been used back in 1981, and is being used to this day. With the device, you’ll also get a Papaya Orange braided cable, and the Warp Charge 30 charger, of course. McLaren’s logo is included in the box as well, in case you were wondering. As far as availability goes, the company said that the phone will be available in Western Europe and North America starting on December 13, while India, China, and Nordic countries will follow soon after. The phone is priced at $699 in the US, while it will cost €699 in Europe.
Background: The OnePlus 6T was announced back in October, and it originally arrived in Mirror Black and Midnight Black variants. The Thunder Purple variant of the phone followed soon after, and now the McLaren Edition of the device is here as well. The OnePlus 6T is fueled by the Snapdragon 845 64-bit octa-core SoC, while it comes in 6GB, 8GB or 10GB RAM variants, though the latter is reserved for the McLaren Edition only. The phone features a 6.41-inch fullHD+ Optic AMOLED display, while a 3,700mAh battery is included on the inside. An in-display fingerprint scanner is a part of the device, and it’s called “Screen Unlock”, while the phone ships with Android 9 Pie, and OnePlus’ OxygenOS skin on top of it. The device is made out of metal and glass, while it sports extremely thin bezels, and a “waterdrop” notch.
Impact: The OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition is the very first special edition OnePlus smartphone that ups RAM count compared to the original variant, and which also brings changes on the inside, in this case in form of new charging tech. This smartphone is considerably more expensive than the regular OnePlus 6T, though, so it remains to be seen how many people will pull the trigger and actually get the phone just because of faster charging, slightly different design, and more RAM.
