Samsung’s upcoming entry-level smartphone offering, the Samsung Galaxy M20, will feature a 5,000mAh battery, according to a report from a German tech publication. Aside from revealing the battery capacity of the device, the report also claims that the Galaxy M20 will have a height of 156.4 millimeters, a width of 74.5 millimeters, and a thickness of 8.8. The rumor further notes that the Galaxy M20 is more than a millimeter thicker than the Galaxy A8s, a mid-range device that Samsung recently launched, and it seems that the thickness is necessary to accommodate the battery of the entry-level handset. Furthermore, according to the recent report, the device will have an 8-megapixel front-facing camera and a vertically-arranged dual rear camera setup that includes one 13-megapixel sensor and one 5-megapixel module. In contrast, earlier rumors state that the Galaxy M20 will feature a single rear camera with a resolution of 16-megapixels.
Background: The Galaxy M20 is one of the devices that will reportedly comprise Samsung’s rumored new entry-level smartphone lineup, the Galaxy M series. Recent articles say that this handset lineup shall replace the Galaxy J series at the low-end segment of the smartphone market, while the Galaxy A lineup will remain as the South Korean tech giant’s mid-range product offering. In addition to the Galaxy M20, the Galaxy M series will also reportedly include the Galaxy M10, M30, M40, and M50 handsets, although unlike the other Galaxy M smartphones, rumors claim that Samsung will market the Galaxy M50 as a mid-range device. Aside from the discontinuation of the Galaxy J series, Samsung’s decision to merge its smartphone lineups will also result in the termination of the Galaxy C and the Galaxy On device lineups.
Earlier leaks and benchmark results already supplied some information about the design and specifications of the Galaxy M20. A recent Geekbench result shows that the Exynos 7885 chipset, which features an octa-core CPU clocked at up to 2.2GHz and the Mali-G71 MP2 GPU, will power the upcoming entry-level smartphone and that the device will include 3GB of RAM. An earlier leak also notes that the Galaxy M20 will feature a waterdrop-shaped notch found above the display, and this notch will contain the handset’s front-facing camera as well as proximity and ambient light sensors. Another report released late last month says that the Galaxy M20 will be available in hardware variants that have either 32GB or 64GB of internal flash storage and that Samsung will sell two color options of the device, namely blue and dark grey. A report earlier mentions that the Galaxy M handsets will use LCD displays, rather than the AMOLED panels found in Samsung’s handset offerings. There is little information available about the pricing and availability of the device, although according to earlier rumors, Samsung will sell the Galaxy M20 in India for Rs. 17,990, which translates to $255 at the current exchange rate.
Impact: The 5000mAh battery and power-efficient chipset of the Galaxy M20 should result in exceptional battery life, although the device’s software will still play a role in determining the power consumption of the handset. Furthermore, earlier rumors have shown that Samsung aims to incorporate design features found in more premium devices into its entry-level handsets, which should help Samsung’s products to better compete in the entry-level segment of the smartphone market.
