The Nokia 9 PureView has been leaking like crazy for weeks now, and the newest rumor just landed, claiming that the phone may use Light’s technology. This information was published by the NPU, and the logic behind it actually makes sense, even though it’s just a guess at this point. The Nokia 9 PureView promo video surfaced quite recently, showing off the device itself, and some of its camera features. In that promo video, several camera features are highlighted, including the “10X more light capture”, “5 simultaneous shots”, “stunning HDR photography”, “refocus”, and so on. Well, a company by the name of “Light”, actually specializes in “computational photography”, and has camera modules that vary from 2 to 16. Light actually has a product for smartphones, and in the description on its website, Light says that one of its smaller 5 module arrays can collect 10x more light than a traditional smartphone sensor. Light also says that the software pipeline works on multiple platforms and devices, and that it can combine and fuse 5, 10, or even 50 images. This may be a coincidence, but the description actually fits nicely with the leaked Nokia 9 PureView promo materials.
That’s not all, though, Light also describes how its LG16 camera can capture 10 images simultaneously and fuse them together in a 52-megapixel photograph, well, in the case of the Nokia 9 PureView, such tech could work, but it would probably create much smaller images, around 13-megapixels. On top of everything, Light also claims that its smartphone camera solution does not require any extra thickness than your regular smartphone camera sensors, and based on the provided renders of the Nokia 9 PureView, the device is still quite thin, despite the fact it has five cameras on the back. As already mentioned, this could be just a coincidence that the Nokia 9 PureView promo materials, and Light’s offerings match, and is a guess on the NPU’s part that the phone may ship with Light’s technology, though it’s possible.
Camera Output The Main Reason Behind Nokia 9 PureView’s Delays
The Nokia 9 PureView was supposed to launch way back in September last year, but it was delayed back then, and several more times after that, at least based on reports. The company’s Chief Product Officer, Juho Sarvikas, was the main man behind those delays, at least if rumors are to be believed. The latest delay actually occurred because of the camera output on the phone, as it was reportedly not good enough. The Nokia 9 PureView is expected to be one of the best camera performers in the market, it seems, and the company is trying to get the phone to the required level. At the beginning of fourth quarter last year, HMD Global actually required a license to use Microsoft’s PureView technology on its products, and that’s the point when the Nokia 9 received the “PureView” branding, at least according to what rumors have been reporting, and that probably complicated things even more for HMD Global in terms of development. PureView technology hasn’t been under the spotlight for a long time, ever since Lumia devices, so it remains to be seen what we will get with the Nokia 9 PureView, though if Light’s technology will be included in all that, it will be interesting to see how will it adapt to PureView tech, presuming that the company plans to use it, not just its branding. Take the part with Light’s tech with a grain of salt, though, as it’s quite possible it’s just a coincidence that the description fits well with Nokia 9 PureView’s promo materials.

Rumors have been suggesting lately that HMD Global plans to release two variants of the Nokia 9 PureView in 2019. The Nokia 9 PureView was always rumored to arrive with the Snapdragon 845, and at this point in time, that SoC is no longer the best Qualcomm has to offer, as the Snapdragon 855 is already available. Well, considering HMD Global has been developing the Nokia 9 PureView for the Snapdragon 845, rumors are claiming that the phone will arrive by the end of this month with the Snapdragon 845, and that the Snapdragon 855 variant will arrive a bit later, and could, possibly, ship with 5G connectivity as well. The two variants of the phone will probably look the same, though no info has surfaced regarding that just yet.
