The launch of Samsung’s foldable smartphone is closer by the day, whether the company announces it on February 20 or not, and as we’re getting closer to its launch, new rumors / reports keep on coming. According to a new report, the company’s foldable smartphone will support 5G connectivity, well, at least one variant of the phone will.
Now, the source claims that the 5G-enabled foldable smartphone from Samsung, probably called the 5G Galaxy Fold, will launch in Korea first, and will carry the codename “SM-F907N”. The source claims that carriers have already completed 5G deployment, and are only waiting for smartphone manufacturers to start releasing smartphones, and by the look of it, Samsung may actually release the very first 5G-enabled smartphone, the top-of-the-line Galaxy S10.
The source has also shared color options for both the 5G and 4G (SM-F900x) variants of Samsung’s foldable smartphone, as it says that the phone will be available in Blue, Green, Silver, and Black color variants, though those color variants will probably be called differently due to marketing, the Black variant may be marketed as “Midnight Black”, or something like that, like the company did in the past.
Galaxy Fold, What’s The Story So Far?
Samsung still did not confirm whether it will announce its foldable smartphone during its February 20 Unpacked event, but the company’s marketing materials offered in Paris do suggest that may happen. That event was scheduled primarily for the company’s Galaxy S10 series of devices, but the Galaxy Fold may make an appearance there, whether Samsung will fully unveil it or not.
The Galaxy Fold may be its name as that name was patented by Samsung last year, and it fits the functionality of this phone perfectly. The company had shown its test foldable smartphone during its developer’s conference last year, though its design was obstructed by a heavy-duty case. Samsung’s foldable smartphone, unlike Xiaomi’s, will fold once, and it will fold inwards, as it has a secondary display on the back. In Xiaomi’s case, it will fold in two places, and that phone has only one display, two-thirds of which power down when it’s folded.
Samsung’s foldable smartphone is said to be quite expensive, rumors are claiming that it will cost over $1,500, and some rumors even suggested that its pricing will go all the way to $2,000. The device is expected to make its way to a number of markets around the world, US included, but it will first launch in Korea, it seems.
Competition, something consumers should be thrilled about
Samsung will launch its foldable smartphone soon, but it will not be the only OEM to do so. Xiaomi, OPPO, Huawei, LG, Motorola, and HTC are all planning to introduce its very own foldable smartphones, and most of them will do that in the first half of this year. HTC is one of those OEMs which will probably announce their foldable phones in the second half of the year, but you can expect Huawei’s offering to arrive at MWC 2019, at least according to rumors, while OPPO, LG, and Xiaomi are also quite close to releasing their very own offerings in this category.
