ASUS is planning to announce its ZenFone 6 series of smartphones in May, it seems. The company did not release an official invite via its social network channels, or anything of the sort, but this invite was spotted on the pages of a magazine, and someone took a picture of it. That magazine came with press passes for MWC 2019, but not everyone got one. As you can see in the provided image down below, the event will take place on May 14 in Valencia, Spain.
This invite clearly states that the “ZenFone 6” will be announced, while ASUS is also using the “Defy Ordinary” tagline here. In addition to that, the very top portion of the device’s front side is shown in this image, but it’s so dark that it’s really difficult to see anything. We do notice that the phone will have rounded edges, and that its frame will be made out of metal, but that’s it.
As it’s usually the case, ASUS probably won’t announce just one smartphone as part of this series, we’ll almost certainly see several phones announced. Back in February last year, ASUS introduced the ZenFone 5, ZenFone 5z, and the ZenFone 5 Lite. The ZenFone 5z is still the company’s flagship handset, while the other two are mid-range offerings.
The company’s Snapdragon 855-powered flagship will probably be a part of the announcement on May 14, and at least one or two other ZenFone 6 devices will launch alongside it. We still do not know if the company will use the “ZenFone 6z” name for its new flagship, or is it looking to rebrand its flagship’s name yet again.
ASUS ZenFone 6 Prototypes & Leaks
The ASUS ZenFone 6-branded devices did surface back in October and November last year. In October, alleged ZenFone 6 prototypes surfaced, showing off a number of different designs. One of the prototypes included a teardrop notch at the top, while the other one came with a teardrop notch which was moved a bit to the side, but not all the way. The third prototype sported a display camera hole in the top-left corner of its display.
All of those phones had different camera setups on the back as well, One of the phones included three vertically-aligned cameras in the top-left corner of its back side, along with a fingerprint scanner. The other one sported two cameras in the same position, and also a fingerprint scanner on the back.
The last prototype included several cameras which were centered on the phone’s back side, similar to the ones on the OnePlus 6 and 6T, but a fingerprint scanner was not visible on the back of the device, so it’s probably included below the display. Every single ZenFone 6 prototype that surfaced sported a 3.5mm headphone jack as well.
Two ZenFone 6 prototypes appeared yet again in November, this time around the prototype with a teardrop notch which is moved to the side appeared with a powered on display, and along with it, a phone with a regular notch at the top of the display, similar to the one on the OnePlus 6. So, if these prototypes are anything to go by, ASUS may introduce three or four phones on May 16.
