How To Change The Google Assistant's Voice

The Google Assistant has a few different voices that you can choose from now, after launching with just a single voice for nearly a year. The voices actually sound pretty nice, especially considering they sound rather life-like. Google had announced that it had a voice based on John Legend, but that has not yet launched – though at this point, it may not launch.

Changing the voice on the Google Assistant is pretty simple to do, and you can do it with just a few easy steps. Today we’ll show you how exactly you can switch the voice of the Google Assistant.

How To Change The Google Assistant Voice

Download, if you haven’t already, the Google Home app – available on the Google Play Store.

After you’ve logged into the app, tap on the profile-looking icon in the lower-right hand corner.

From there, you’ll want to tap on Settings, which is located in the “General Settings” section.

Tap on the Assistant panel, or you can swipe over to that panel.

Next, you’ll want to tap on Assistant Voice.

This is where you will see the many different voices available for the Google Assistant. There are currently ten options, which might change in the future as Google adds more.

You can swipe left and right to see the different voices. Stop on one of the colors to hear what it sounds like.

Once you find a voice that you like, just leave it there, and you’ll now hear that voice when you use the Google Assistant on every device that is connected to your account.

The voices included are: red, orange, amber, green, cyan, blue, purple, pink, British Racing Green and Sydney Harbour Blue. As you might expect by the last two names, those offer British and Australian accents. There are a couple of male-sounding voices available too. There is no limit to how often you can change your Google Assistant’s voice either, you can change it at any time.

If you wanted different voices for your smartphone and for your Google Home Hub, that’s not possible yet. It’s one voice for all of the devices that you have on your account. So you’d better pick one that you like.

Wrap Up

This is a feature that Google added and not everyone is going to even care about it. Most won’t care if the Google Assistant sounds different, as long as it does what they want the Google Assistant to do, they are good to go. But for those that like to do a bit of customization, this is a great feature to have. And seeing as Android is all about customization, this is not a surprising feature for the Google Assistant.

Currently, you can only change the voice from your smartphone or tablet – basically, you need to use the Google Home app to be able to change the voice. Soon, Google may open this to other devices, particularly smart displays like the Lenovo Smart Display or the Google Home Hub, where you can actually see the voices that you are looking to choose from.
